You may remember that for a short time in the early 2000’s Evans was building the AE-100 amp, which they couldn’t keep on the shelf. Around 2003, when the “RE” (Ron Eschete) model was introduced, the AE-100 was discontinued. Due to popular demand, the AE-100 (now AE-100 GOLD Reissue) is being reintroduced as a limited run model, with numbers one through ten, and hand-signed and numbered. Instead of being a “bigger and better” version of the original, the new AE-100 GOLD is “smaller and better” – at an incredible feather-weight 20 pounds. Dimensions: 14.5" wide x 13" tall x 7" deep.
This may be the most compact / highest power amp on the planet. By itself it is rated conservatively at 100 watts RMS, in a combo format with a single 8 inch speaker. If you add an 8 ohm cab you will have 200 watts RMS, the same amount as the Evans flagship model JE-200. This offers incredible versatility…use the amp as-is for smaller club work (the amp’s cutting power is just incredible), or add an 8 ohm cab for larger rooms. I have used it in a club –with no extra cabinet added- with a loud organ trio and had no problem cutting through, with lots of headroom leftover.
I was personally on the design team which reintroduced the model, in a lighter-weight size but with some upgraded features. The 8 inch speaker is the latest Eminence Neodymium, with increased low end. Improved circuitry is the same that is offered in the other Evans models, including an improved “expand” (high-end EQ) feature, and improved digital reverb with greater warmth. The controls of dwell, buff, master volume, body, depth – in fact the entire electronic portion – are exactly the same as on all the larger Evans models.
I personally wouldn’t buy a Henriksen, Clarus, or Polytone…these amps all have a processed digital sound and get muddy at higher volumes. For just a little more you can buy the AE-100 GOLD which is probably the last amp you’ll ever need. Add a 12 inch cabinet later on and you will have all the flexibility that any gig will call for. You will never fear an organ trio again!
